The Legend of Mazzaro's: An Italian Market That Elevates the Quality of an Entire City
Would you ever move cities just to be closer to a local market?
Sounds silly, right? Moving everything you have, moving family, switching jobs, just for a place that sells produce and meals?
Well……….have you met Mazzaro’s Italian Market?
This isn’t just any typical market; it’s an institution, a legend, a Tampa Bay staple, a beacon of Italy outside of Italy, a mandatory destination, and easily one of the greatest markets in the entire country, and this is coming from someone who has only visited a handful of states. I am that confident in the quality of this place matching up against anything you decide to throw at me as a counter. Even New York City will struggle to show off places as authentically Italian as this culinary and produce masterclass.
Mazzaro’s is an Italian-centric market, a deli, a meat market, a grab-and-go station, a coffee bar, a fresh pasta stand, a bakery, a pizzeria, a winery, a cheese shop, a home décor store, a gelato shop, and overall, an incredible experience that spans multiple buildings.
In most cases, places this wildly diverse can fall into the trap of being a jack of all trades but master of none, but Mazzaro’s excels in every variation of what you’re here for. You want fresh pasta? Fresh and available every single day, and you must try their lobster ravioli. You want sandwiches? Guess what, they have some of the best sandwiches in ALL OF FLORIDA, including their epic fish sandwich that is only available on Fridays. I am particularly fond of their chicken Milanese with arugula, but no sandwich they have will disappoint you.
You just want some pastries? Well guess what, some of the best cannolis and cakes you’ll ever have can also be found here. How about coffee to go along with their dessert options? Welp, they have a literal coffee bar that makes spectacular coffee. Maybe I only want crackers and cheese? Their cheese selection quantity easily climbs to over 100 options and its constantly changing, and constantly receiving imports from other parts of the U.S. and Europe. On top of that, some of the cheeses being sold are made in-house, another rarity. Within this space you can shop, dine, sample, drink, learn, indulge, and relax (after you survive the rigorous ordering process among a sea of customers).
I would say that every city needs a Mazzaro’s, but to be perfectly blunt I’m not sure you’ll find many institutions with the sheer effort level that you find here. I don’t know how often you can duplicate something like Mazzaro’s. The dedicated hard-working staff endures the most claustrophobic crowds but does it with a smile and friendliness. I’ve never had a bad meal here, and I’ve been visiting this place for 15 years at least. That type of consistency in any part of life is difficult to come by. That’s why Mazzaro’s Italian Market has that rare distinction of being a market so good, so diverse, so consistent, that its worth adding to a list of reasons to move to St. Petersburg. This place is just as crucial to this city’s level of quality compared to Central Park’s importance in relation to Manhattan.
I have no idea what my future is when the next lease is up in 2027. I have no idea how Florida is going to be as we continue dive bombing ourselves into third-world country status with capitalist dragons hoarding all the wealth. But what I do know is that if there’s a city to consider moving to iffffffffffffffffff things in the United States can improve, it would be St. Pete. They have the friendly youthful energy, the beaches, the variety, but they also happen to have one of the best markets in all of these United States.
But seriously, get their Friday fish sandwich, it might change your entire life.
